ABSTRACT
Background: Home accidents are significant contributors to both death and long-term disability among under five children, accounting for a large loss of productive life. Public health specialists have developed the phrase "Modern Day Epidemics" to explain the prevalence of home accidents in this age group because under five children are naturally explorative. Mothers serve as the primary caregivers and play a vital role in ensuring the safety of young children. Their awareness, supervision, and prompt responses can significantly reduce the risk of home accidents. Educated and vigilant mothers are better equipped to identify hazards and implement preventive measures. Therefore, the aim of this protocol paper is to assess and enhance maternal behaviour regarding home safety, with the ultimate goal of reducing the incidence of home accidents among children under five. Methods: The study will be conducted as a pragmatic two-arm randomized controlled trial to evaluate the effectiveness of an intervention aimed at reducing home accidents among children under five. The protocol for this trial has been developed in accordance with the SPIRIT (Standard Protocol Items: Recommendations for Interventional Trials) guidelines toensure methodological rigor and transparency. The primary outcome of the study is the level of maternal behaviour related to home accident prevention, which will be assessed using a structured knowledge questionnaire and a researcher-developed five-point Likert scale. These tools are grounded in the Protection Motivation Theory, providing a theoretical basis for understanding and measuring behavioural change. Data analysis will involve comparing outcomes between the intervention and control groups to determine the effectiveness of the intervention in enhancing maternal safety practices and ultimately reducing the incidence of home accidents in young children. Conclusion: Findings of the study will provide data with regard to the effectiveness of nurse-led interventions that focus on the prevention of home accidents among children who are under five years of age on mother’s behaviour.
