ABSTRACT
The skin's barrier function presents a significant obstacle for simple, non-invasive drug delivery
methods. Conventional liposomes and niosomes are not well-suited for transdermal delivery
because they struggle to penetrate the skin effectively, are prone to instability and drug leakage,
and often clump and merge together. Transfersomes, designed specifically to overcome these
limitations, offer a promising alternative. Transfersomes, however, are specifically engineered
to address these shortcomings. These artificially created vesicles are designed to emulate the
behavior of natural cell vesicles or cells undergoing exocytosis. The ultra-deformable lipid
membranes of Transfersomes allow them to potentially overcome the challenges of transdermal
delivery. This paper provides a comprehensive exploration of Transfersomes, covering their
composition, mechanism of action, advantages, disadvantages, preparation, characterization,
and diverse applications in pharmaceuticals and biomedicine. Furthermore, the paper discusses
successful research in transferosomal delivery and examples of marketed products, highlighting their potential to revolutionize targeted therapies by improving drug delivery
across the skin.
