A STUDY TO ASSESS THE OCCURRENCE AND ASSOCIATED RISK FACTORS OF DELIRIUM AMONG OLDER PATIENTS ADMITTED IN SELECTED HOSPITALS OF KHEDA, DISTRICT Authors: Angel P , JOSHI S* AND DEEPAK K.
ABSTRACT
Aim: A study to assess the occurrence and associated risk factors of delirium among older patients.
Method: A descriptive study carried out among 170 older patients, who were over 60 years and
admitted at least 24 hours The samples were selected through purposive sampling technique and
inclusion; exclusion criteria. The level of disorientation was measured using Confusion Assessment
Method (CAM).
Results: Out of 170 participants, 5.3% had confirmed delirium, 13.5% had possible delirium, and 81.2%
showed no signs of delirium. The majority of patients were aged 60–69 years, with nearly equal gender
distribution. Most participants were illiterate, had a monthly income below ?10,000, and belonged to
nuclear families. The most common symptom observed was inattention, followed by acute onset and
fluctuation, disorganized thinking, and altered consciousness. The overall risk of delirium was
moderate, with a mean risk score of 3.72. A significant association was found between age and both
prevalence and risk of delirium.
Conclusion: Early identification and monitoring of elderly patients can enhance patient outcomes in
hospital settings.
