CIRRHOSIS AND MALNUTRITION: THERAPEUTIC ROLE OF VITAMINS IN LIVER REGENERATION AND FUNCTION

ABSTRACT
Liver is the primary organ for the metabolism, storage and detoxification of various nutrients and toxins. Cirrhosis is the replacement of healthy hepatic tissue by connective tissue, leading to necrosis of hepatic cells. Cirrhosis is the last stage of liver injury. It is one of the top leading causes of morbidity and mortality, primarily associated with chronic alcoholism, viral hepatitis, obesity, smoking, and metabolic syndromes. Initially the disease is asymptomatic, but with progression, symptoms like loss of appetite, nausea, weakness, fever, and weight loss appears. During cirrhosis, the liver is unable to metabolize nutrients, particularly vitamins. Deficiency of both fat-soluble and water-soluble vitamins is recorded due to reduced bile production, impaired absorption, and inadequate intake. This review emphasizes the importance of nutritional therapy and targeted vitamin supplementation as key components in the comprehensive management of patients with liver cirrhosis.
