EFFECT OF JACOBSON’S RELAXATION TECHNIQUE VERSUS GENERAL STRETCHING EXERCISES AMONG COLLEGE GIRLS WITH PRIMARY DYSMENORRHEA Authors: Isha , NAITHANI S AND RANA S
ABSTRACT
Background-Primary dysmenorrhea is a common gynecological problem affecting college girls, causing
significant menstrual pain and impacting daily life. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of
Jacobson’s relaxation technique and general stretching exercises in reducing menstrual pain and improving
quality Of life among college girls with primary dysmenorrhea.
Aim of the study- To evaluate the effectiveness of Jacobson’s Progressive Muscular Relaxation Technique
versus General Stretching Exercises among college girls with primary dysmenorrhea.
Design- Comparative research design.
Setting- The study was conducted among college girls.
Sample- A convenient sample of 16 girls with primary dysmenorrhea.
Result- Both JPMR and General Stretching Exercises produced significant reductions in menstrual pain
intensity and symptom severity. However, the JPMR group demonstrated a greater mean reduction in both
VAS and MSQ scores compared to the stretching group. The findings indicate that relaxation-based therapy
was more effective than stretching in alleviating menstrual pain and improving overall comfort during
menstruation.Conclusion- The study concluded that both JPMR and General Stretching Exercises are effective non-
pharmacological approaches for managing primary dysmenorrhea. However, Jacobson’s Progressive
Muscular Relaxation was found to be more effective in reducing menstrual pain and associated symptoms
among college girls. This technique can be recommended as a safe, simple, and cost-effective method for
menstrual pain management and overall well-being.
